When it gets really cold and Christmas is near I think of two things:
- Skiing in the Catskills
- All of the amazing artist tours that happen in the summer.
One of my favorites is the “Artists’ Studio Tour. Usually held at the end of July.
You can visit up to 20 artists in their studios on a self-guided tour through Margaretville, Arkville, Halcottsville, Halcott, Fleischmanns and Roxbury.
THE STUDIOS ON THE TOUR ARE AS VARIED AS THE ARTISTS THEMSELVES. Sculptors, a weaver, potters, woodworker, printers, photographers and painters all work in unique spaces that help stimulate the creative process. The spaces utilized by the artists include historic buildings, old barns, modern studios, a greenhouse, a spare room in a residence and a garage.
THE COMMON FEATURE OF ALL THESE STUDIOS IS THAT EACH ARTIST HAS A SPACE DEDICATED TO HIS OR HER CREATIVE PROCESS. Many of these locations are very private and are seldom seen by anyone other than the artist; others double as galleries and shops where the artist’s works are regularly displayed. Some of the studios are easily accessible, while others are far off the beaten path. Winding one’s way through the Catskill Region to seek out these gems is part of the fun of the Artists’ Studios Tour. Enjoy the adventure into the creative world.
